A high-pressure area over north-east Europe is driving cold air from the east over Germany, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported on Monday, although western Germany is still enjoying comparatively warm sea air from Ireland.

The milder temperatures in the south and west mean an increased chance of rain or even up to five centimetres of snow, while the north-east is expected to remain dry.
Meanwhile, coast dwellers should expect powerful stormy gusts of wind from the east and south-east.
Berliners were quick to joke about the cold on Twitter.
“It's cold in Berlin. Wild boar and polar bears are changing places on Alexanderplatz,” said one user.
Es ist kalt in Berlin. Auf dem Alexanderplatz tauschen Wildschweine und Eisbären ihre Plätze.

Overnight to Tuesday, more scattered rain is expected in the west and more snow at high elevations.
And the cold weather is set to continue into Tuesday in the north-east, with temperatures staying at -10C in areas close to the Oder river on the border with Poland.
