Most New Year’s Eve celebrations around Spain will take place under clear skies tonight according to the country’s national weather agency, Aemet.

Aemet is predicting light drizzle in the northeast of the country on Thursday morning which could continue throughout the day, while in much of the rest of the country, skies will be mainly clear, with a few light clouds.

Temperatures in the Canary Islands and Andalusia could reach a maximum of 20C, while the north of the country could see highs of around 15C.

Galicia, in Spain’s northwestern corner, will experience blustery weather into the evening as an Atlantic front moves over the region, bringing rain to much of the country by Friday, January 1st.

The Canary Islands will enjoy clear skies and warm temperatures that are set to continue into the new year until at least January 3rd.

Revellers will pack into squares across the country to ring in the New Year, one of the most iconic being the Puerta del Sol in central Madrid, which will be under increased security this New Year’s Eve.

The Sol metro station will be closed from 9pm and those wanting to see in the New Year in the capital’s iconic square will have to go through security checks before entering.

The maximum capicity this year will be 25,000 and people are being warned not to take in hazardous materials such as glass bottles, knives or fireworks.

The forecast from 12am – 12pm on January 1st.
