1. Skansen, Stockholm
Stockholm’s Skansen open air museum has been hosting New Year’s Eve parties since the 1800s. Here you’ll find hot wine, dancing, singing and fireworks, alongside spectacular views over the capital. Plus if you can’t make it in person you can watch the whole thing on Swedish TV network SVT. This year’s hosts will be journalist and presenter Micke Leijnegard and opera singer Malena Ernman.
When: December 31st, 8pm – 12.15am

2. Magistratparken and Malmö Opera, Malmö
Every year Malmö city council and Malmö Opera collaborate to create a celebration designed for the whole family, starting off with a show for children at 1pm at Magistratparken, one of the largest parks in the city. Between 1pm and 5pm children can make their own New Year’s eve crafts, enjoy a tasty sausage barbecue and watch a magic show. At 5pm there will be fireworks. For the adults, music, dance and fireworks are offered outside Malmö Opera 11.45pm, followed by a countdown to 2016.

3. Götaplatsen, Gothenburg
Götaplatsen, one of Gothenburg’s largest squares, has been hosting New Year’s eve parties for years, based on the principle that no one in the city should have to celebrate alone. In 2014 around 20,000 people crammed into the square. This time, for the third year in a row, the host will be the Swedish magician and comedian Stefan Odelberg. Swedish actress Klara Zimmergren will also appear in a video clip reading a moving text called ‘same world’ written by the musician Emil Jensen.

4. Rådhustorget, Umeå
At Rådhustorget square in Umeå there will be a traditional celebration with speeches, music and fireworks. This city northern of Sweden usually is cold this time of year, but the weather is expected to be mild this New Year’s and the temperature might even raise up to 3C. Get your disco shoes on and prepare to party!

5. Uppsala castle, Uppsala
If you planning on celebrating New Year’s in the student city of Uppsala, the best place to welcome in 2016 is by the castle, situated on a hill with spectacular views of the cathedral. At midnight locals traditionally gather to watch the annual firework display that sparkles up the sky. Here, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing, so wrap up warm while you enjoy the show.
