The poll conducted by YouGov for the Deutsche Presse Agentur news agency shows that 66 percent of Germans expect Isis to attack them, while only 17 percent believe this will not happen. A further 17 percent gave no answer to the question.

Up until now Germany has remained untouched by large-scale terrorist attacks.

The first – and to date only – Islamist-motivated terrorist attack in Germany occurred in 2011 when an ethnic Albanian man from Kosovo shot and killed two US airmen and wounded two others at Frankfurt Airport.

In November an international football match between Germany and the Netherlands was cancelled due to what the Interior Ministry described as credible evidence of a planned terrorist attack on the game.

But Germans are nervous in the wake of the Isis attacks on Paris on November 13th which left 130 people dead.

After those attacks, Germany offered military assistance to France in its fight against Isis in Syria and western Iraq.

The YouGov poll was conducted between December 21st and 23rd.
