The accident occurred when the man, who was riding towards Linden, ended up on the wrong side of the road and was hit by an oncoming vehicle, announced Bern cantonal police.

An ambulance attended the site and the man was flown to hospital by Rega air ambulance but he later died from his injuries.

The 20-year-old driver of the car and a female 22-year-old passenger were unhurt.

Lindenstrasse was closed for several hours following the accident.

The incident comes just weeks after the annual report of the accident prevention bureau (BFU) revealed that the number of serious accidents involving e-bikes rose to a new high last year, with five deaths and 145 injuries.

Accidents have risen in the past four years in direct proportion to the increase in electric bikes on the roads, according to the BFU.

The relatively high speed of e-bikes results in longer stopping distances and leads to other road users misjudging their speed, BFU spokesman Daniel Menna told the SDA news agency.
