The bomb threat was made against the Hotel Molitor in the 16th Arrondisement, Bierhoff told the Kölner Express.

“There was a bomb threat, the hotel was totally blocked off and evacuated,” he said.

The threat was called in to the hotel at 9am, the newspaper reports, leading to an immediate and wide-scale police operation.

The team have since been taken to a different location.

A spokesperson for the hotel confirmed to The Local that the bomb threat had been received and that hotel management had evacuated staff and guests from the hotel in line with safety procedures.

The hotel remained closed at 12.45pm, the spokesperson said. A safety cordon had been established by police and officers were currently working at the scene.

A reporter for Bild newspaper captured a picture of the blocked-off street shortly after midday.

On Friday evening the German national team are playing against France in a friendly as part of the build up to the European Championships 2016 which are being held in France.

“I want to thank the fans, the team, the German Football Association, the coaches and the support staff,” the Manchester United midfielder wrote on his Facebook page.

Schweinsteiger debuted for the national team against Hungary in June 2004 and went on to win over 100 caps, playing at every major tournament since Euro 2004 in Portugal.

In his 120 appearances for the national team he scored 24 goals.

“I was able to experience indescribably beautiful and successful moments during the 120 appearances,” Schweinsteiger wrote.

Winning the World Cup in 2014 was “a historical and emotional achievement that will not be repeated in my career.”

“Therefore it’s right that I step back from the national team for qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and wish the squad all the best.

“It was an honour to play for you,” he said to the German public. “Thank you for everything that I experienced with you.”
