Frenchman turns mum’s tomb into a picnic table

A Frenchman has found a novel way of mourning his mother, by creating a picnic table out of her tomb, where he now goes to enjoy a glass of wine, a bite to eat and a good old chat.

The 33-year-old created the ‘MomTomb’ out of white stone, and says “everyone is invited to sit down, eat and talk” at his mother's grave.

Located in a small cemetery in the village of Mons-en-Montois in the Île-de-France region, the tomb comprises a table surrounded by benches, seating up to ten people.

The inspiration for the unusual resting place came from Natlacen’s trip to the Philippines. There, he observed that following a death, locals “met up to eat, play or talk for two or three days around the tomb.

“I said to myself that they should make tombs for picnicking. And then I thought of it for my mother,” he told reporters from France Bleu.

And far from upsetting local residents, the ‘MomTomb’ has proved a popular place to visit in the village; Natlacen says it is not uncommon for him to visit the cemetery and see others sitting at the tomb.

His one rule? No red wine or lemon at the table, as they could damage the stone.
