Comic books to draw new Millennium spin off

Stieg Larsson’s Millennium books are reported to be getting a second alternative ending in a set of new comic books, months after David Lagercrantz published a controversial sequel to the Swedish trilogy.

The comics are being penned by Franco-Swedish writer Sylvain Runberg and Spanish artist Belen Ortega, according to reports by Swedish publish broadcaster Sveriges Radio and comic site Bleeding Cool.

Runberg previously adapted the Millennium series into comic form, with her efforts to depict Swedish heroes Lisbeth Salander and Michael Blomqvist faring better than separate much-hyped versions by comic giant DC Comics Vertigo, Bleeding Cool reports.

The website suggests that the first volume in the European duo’s new series will be released next autumn.

The original Millennium series, which chronicles the adventures of tattooed computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist, made Larsson one of the world's best-loved crime writers.

His work has also been adapted into film versions of the series, in both Swedish and English.

But Larsson's fame came posthumously, after his death of a heart attack in 2004, a year before the release of the first book in the series, 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'.

News of the planned comic books comes two months after Swedish writer David Lagercrantz penned his own controversial sequel to the trilogy.

The Swede said last week that he was already planning another two sequels to his book.

While many Nordic Noir fans have celebrated the continuation of the series, some – including his longtime partner, Eva Gabrielsson – vehemently opposed Lagercrantz taking up the torch.

Dad Henrik, 44, represented Sweden 106 times between 1993 and 2009, winning Bronze with his nation at the 1994 World Cup.

At club level he also played in the Uefa Cup final with Celtic, and won the Uefa Champions League and La Liga with FC Barcelona.

Now Jordan, 19, will have a chance to start building a legacy of his own in what will be the biggest stage he has played on to date.

The men’s football squads for the Olympics are made up of players under the age of 23, as well as three selected players over the age limit.

The Helsingborg forward has previously represented his nation at U17, U19 and U21 level.

Larsson is one of the higher profile names in a squad comprised mostly of promising young players. There will be no final swan song for veterans like Kim Källström, 33, or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 34.

The latter had been rumoured as a participant at the Olympics when he was included in the initial 35-man shortlist in June.
