Officers in a highway patrol team couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the elderly woman making her way down the motorway towards Sankt Pölten on Sunday afternoon.
She told them that she had been to a fete in Stattersdorf and had decided to make her way back home via the motorway.
She admitted that she had initially been driving with the flow of traffic but had pulled over onto the hard shoulder “because there were so many cars” coming in her direction. Roadworks meant that she was diverted and missed the exit that would have taken her home.
She told the officers that she thought it was better to go on the motorway than “having to drive on the pavement”.
State police said in a press release that it was one of the most unusual things they had ever seen on the motorway and that the woman was lucky to have escaped her adventure unhurt.
