John Christian Elden told a court investigating whether to freeze the 10,171 Norwegian kroner held in Vasquez’s banks accounts, that he believed there was no longer an accused in the case.
“He [Elden], in an email dated 17 July 2015, raised questions over whether there is an accused in the case, as he has information that Vasquez is now deceased,” reads a ruling from 7 August, found by VG newspaper
Vasquez (25) was one of a group of young Norwegians radicalized as part of the Profetens Umma group in Oslo. He travelled to Syria in Autumn 2012, eventually one of the most senior European Jihadi commanders fighting for Isis, or Islamic State.
He was first reported killed last autumn, shortly after Isis posted a terror video in which he appears to show off a group of prisoners imprisoned in a building, before blowing the building up with them inside as he smiles and gives thanks to Allah.
According to Lieutenant General Kjell Grandhagen, head of the Norwegian Intelligence Service, several Norwegians appear to have risen to quite senior leadership positions within Isis.
