Five police officers received minor injuries in the collisions, which began after the unidentified driver caused an accident on a road to the municipality of Tavannes from Tramelan in the Bernese Jura on Saturday at around 9.45pm, police and the local prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

His car collided with another vehicle and continued on, narrowly escaping a collision with a Swiss Post bus on the same road before crashing into a car in Tavannes, the statement said.

Police patrol cars caught up with the suspect, who was driving dangerously on a road toward Reconvilier, in the neighbouring canton of Jura, police said.

During the police pursuit the motorist crashed into one of the police cars, according to the statement.

Other police vehicles pursued the motorist who ignored an order to pull over, crashing into another patrol car before driving onto a motorway in a northeasterly direction toward the town of Moutier.

Officers in another patrol car from the Jura cantonal police force attempted to stop the vehicle at the Choindez exit of the motorway in the canton of Jura but the car carried on, despite having sustained damage.

While being pursued by police his car crashed into another vehicle and was so badly damaged that it could not continue, police said.

Police surrounded the car and arrested the driver, who was transported to hospital for a check but was uninjured.

Five officer were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The prosecutor’s office for the Bernese Jura-Seeland region has issued a call for witnesses to step forward, particularly any drivers who believe their life was put at risk by the motorist.
