Hollande posted his first image on the picture-sharing site on Thursday afternoon under the handle @FHollande.
The move came after a meeting with Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom at the Elysee Palace in Paris, during which the pair discussed “technology, french culture, and of course Instagram”, according to a picture posted by Systrom (below).
Hollande could boast almost 3,000 followers by Friday morning, not bad for a day's work but still a far cry from his 1.1 million followers on Twitter.
The French president has not shown too much of an interest in social media in the past, only starting to tweet in January 2014 despite having been in office for two years previously, noted the French channel BFM TV.
It remains unclear if Thursday's Instagram post, below, is a sign that Hollande is finally embracing social media, or if it's just a publicity stunt to boost his image, which if opinion polls are believed needs all the help it can get.
Either way, Hollande could use any followers he can get – the most recent polls put his approval rating at just 16 percent.
