You might assume that international pop icon Cher might not concern herself with what is happening to the political landscape of northeastern Spain, but the “Believe” singer was quick to reply to fans who asked her opinion on Sunday’s election results.
“Think it can do kind of damage that can’t b reversed (sic),” she tweeted to her 2.85 million followers.
“U can’t put toothpaste back in the tube,” she added, warning that Catalonia might regret embarking on the path towards independence.

Pro-independence parties won an absolute majority in the Catalan parliament in Sunday’s regional election, which they had billed as a de facto referendum on independence.
Q&A: Six things you need to know about the Catalan election results
They declared victory, stating the result was a clear mandate to begin the process of seceding from Spain, despite not gaining over 50 percent of the vote.
Cher ended her tweet with: “Wish them well, they r lovely ppl!”
The pop singer and Oscar-winning actress, who has enjoyed a career spanning six decades, has a huge following on the social networking site and is well known for tweeting back to her fans.
Her tweet attracted attention on both sides of the political debate, which prompted her to pull out some hard political facts about the region.
“Catalonia is 20 percent of Spain’s GDP. Economies may crash if u split and r wrong, throwing Spain in2 tailspin, no EU 4U. I pray I’m wrong.”

As Cher points out, the issue of whether an independent Catalonia would be able to join the EU has been hotly contested.
Brussels has warned that an independent Catalonia would have to leave the EU and re-apply for readmission.
But she was seemingly eager to see both sides of the debate, also tweeting to a pro-independence fan:
“I believe you deserve your freedom but your fate is still involved with Spain's.”
Spanish news outlets have jumped on the story and have even begun consulting Cher on her views on the other hot news topics of the day.
Radio programme Hoy por Hoy sent her a tweet asking Cher her opinion of the VW emissions scandal:
Hello from Spain @cher! What is your opinion about all this VW emissions scandal? What car do you drive? #HoyporHoyPreguntaACher

And Cher has not confined her views to Spanish politics, also making her opinion clear of US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
