Catalan police said on Monday that they have accused a 49-year-old from Barcelona of a crime against road safety after he was found to be driving an airport bus with a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit.

While driving 46 people to Barcelona's El Prat airport last Tuesday, police say the driver was driving dangerously, making zigzags along the highway.

Passengers told police they feared that their lives were in danger as an accident seemed imminent due to his treacherous driving.

The passengers then convinced the driver to stop and pull over on the side of the highway near Mataró.

Police received word that a bus was stopped along the highway and at first thought it had broken down, but the passengers told officers about the driver's behaviour.

When police breathalyzed the driver, he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.69 mg/l – more than four times the legal limit of 0.15 mg/l.
