Left-leaning El Pais has the headline: “The Independents won the election and lost their plebiscite” with a photograph of the leaders of the parties within the Junts Pel Si coalition.
An editorial calls the result “A defeat and a victory”
It states that Mas will have to form a pact to stay on as regional president, that Ciutadans (the Catalan branch of Albert Rivera’s Ciudadanos) has become the second force and increased its strength in Spain.
The paper notes that the Socialists did better than expected but that the result has sunk the PP in the region.
Spain’s right-wing El Mundo has the headline: “The majority of Catalans say no to independence” with an editorial that the separatists have lost their plebiscite.
The paper notes the ‘collapse’ of the PP, the disappointing result for Podemos and the success of Ciutadans.
La Razón, another right wing newspaper, also calls it a failure for the separtists with a headline “Mas failed to meet his ojectives”, alongside a photograph of the Catalan president swigging cava straight from the bottle.
The right wing daily ABC takes the view that “Catalonia doesn’t want to go”, noting that 52 percent of the electorate voted ‘no’ to independence.
The Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia takes a different stance with the headline: “The Yes prevails” and carries an editorial noting the 77.5 percent turnout and calling the result “an opportunity for dialogue”.
The centre-left Catalan newspaper El Periódico called the results “A bitter victory”.
