The Franco-American suspect, the object of a $100,000 reward for his capture, was caught on Tuesday by a cantonal police brigade fighting organized crime while he was driving on the Route de Meyrin, a road northwest of Geneva’s downtown, police said.
The man, sought for 22 armed bank robberies in Canada between 2010 and 2015, was detained under an international warrant for arrest, the newspaper said.
Police in Canada referred to the man as the “vaulter bandit” because of his habit of jumping over counters when demanding money from bank tellers.
He carried a gun in all his robberies and on one occasion wished bank employees “happy mother’s day” while carrying out a heist.
The Canadian Bankers Association offered the award for information leading to his arrest in a bid to put an end to his unsolved string of thefts.
It is not clear how Geneva police were able to stop the man.
The suspect is in detention while awaiting an extraction order to Canada, where he risks life imprisonment.
The Vaulter Bandit's last known holdup was of a bank in the city of Mississauga outside Toronto on May 8th.
