Behind-the-scenes peek as Game of Thrones films on location in Spain

It has wowed audiences worldwide with its incredible landscapes, fascinating storylines and iconic characters and now Game of Thrones has returned to Spain to film its eagerly-awaited sixth series.

The HBO production is on location in the Catalan city of Girona between September 3rd and 18th and despite the heavily guarded set, the first photos and videos of the shoot have surfaced.

Several key actors have been seen out and about in the medieval city, including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark).

After locations in southern Spain – including the Alcazar of Seville and the Roman bridge of Córdoba – appeared in series five,  Game of Thrones has returned to Spain for another series, spending much of the autumn shooting in various locations around the country.

After the two-week shoot in Girona, production will move to the northern region of Navarre before decamping to the coastal areas of Peniscola in the east and Almería in the south during October.

Locations to be used in the sixth series include the Castle of Zafra in Guadalajara and the Alcazaba walled fortification in Almería.

Adapted from the hugely popular novels of George R. R. Martin the Games of Thrones television series has already proved a boon for Spanish tourism, attracting fans to visit location sites from Series five in and around Seville.

A video showing British actress Faye Marsay – who plays the Waif – filming in Girona has been uploaded to YouTube, showing dozens of extras lining the Calle de la Claveria in the heart of the city's old quarter.

The programme's crew have thanks locals for giving them such a warm welcome, with actress Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark on the hit show, tweeting to thank fans who waited outside Girona cathedral on September 4th.
