Wanted: Family with two kids to save village school in eastern Spain

The school bell could ring for the last time for students and teachers in the tiny Valencian town of Bufali – unless they get some new neighbours.

With a population of  around 150 people, Bufali fears that it is too small to continue studies at its only school where currently just four students attend, broadcaster Cuatro reported on Wednesday.

With two of those four leaving the school next year, the town is now searching for a family with at least two children to move in so that the school will have a future.

“We will only be left with two students and with just two students, the school will close,” one teacher told Cuatro.

In exchange for moving house, the town hall said it will offer the family a house with a rent of €200 and a permanent job at a waste collection company paying €15,000 annually.

Dozens of families from around Spain have already contacted the town about the offer. 

“It's stability for the little ones and a secure job and a roof,” one woman who applied for the offer with her husband and four children told Cuatro.

The city will be conducting personal interviews with the families who apply to decide who gets to take the offer, according to newspaper Las Provincias.
