Germany seek Scotland win to seal EC spot

The German national team face Scotland in Glasgow on Monday evening, hoping that a win will secure them a spot in the 2016 European Champions.

Germany's start to qualifying for the 2016 competition was beset by problems as Die Mannschaft appeared to be suffering from a post-World Cup hangover.

A loss away to Poland and a flat draw against Ireland meant that after three games the World Champions had only accumulated four points and were limping along behind lesser opposition.

But a steady improvement in form since, consolidated by a comprehensive 3-1 win against Poland on Friday, means that Germany are aiming to qualify with a win against the Scots on their home turf.

If the Irish fail to beat Georgia in Dublin and Germany win, then coach Joachim Löw's team will be progressing to the European finals for a record 16th time in succession, reports Bild.

But standing in Germany's way is a dire record against the Scots with only one win from six competitive games between the two nations on Scottish soil.

The last the last time the two teams met in Glasgow in 2003, they fought out a battling 1-1 draw, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports.

The Scottish team also know they will have to get something from the game after a shock defeat away to Georgia on Friday left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

“Their defeat makes the situation a bit more dangerous for us,” Löw said. “Like always, when they play at home they will fight to the very last and do everything they can to leave the pitch with their dignity in tact.”

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
