The stash – said to have a street value of more than €10 million – was found hidden in the container of squid on a cargo ship from Argentina, Italian media reported.
Federico Cafiero De Raho, the prosecutor of Reggio Calabria, said controls have been tightened at the port, which is known for the huge quantities of cocaine transported by organized crime groups.
In June, four tonnes of cocaine, with a street value of €1 billion, were seized at the port after being transported there from South America.
Meanwhile, a stash worth €43 million was found among Ecuadorian bananas delivered to the port last year.
Italy is a key entry point into the European drugs market from South America, with the Calabrian port being particularly vulnerable due to its location in the heartland of the 'Ndrangheta mafia.
