Commuters travelling between Stockholm and Gothenburg faced heavy delays on Friday evening after an overhead cable was pulled down near Gothenburg earlier in the afternoon.
The incident, which took place between the towns of Partille and Jonsered outside of Gothenburg, caused major problems for rail traffic between the city in western Sweden and Stockholm on Friday afternoon.
Two trains – one en route to Stockholm and one commuter train going to Alingsås north-east of Gothenburg – ground to a complete halt and had to be evacuated at around 4pm.
“The commuter train had been standing still for around an hour and a half when it was evacuated,” said spokeswoman Paula Danielsson at regional public transport company Västtrafik.
The train going to Stockholm also had to be evacuated.

Agneta Eklund, spokeswoman at the Swedish Transportation Authority (Trafikverket), said they had moved passengers on the Stockholm-bound train to another train after one of the tracks was reopened later in the afternoon.
“But there will be delays throughout the evening, even though trains have started rolling again on one track,” she added.
Several trains were expected to be either delayed or cancelled on Friday evening as a result of the afternoon incident.
