Mia, a perennial favourite, came ahead of Lara and Emma in the hit parade of names for girls in German-speaking Switzerland, which accounts for almost two-thirds of the population, the federal statistics office (BFS) said.

Noah again topped the list for boys, with Leon and Luca ranked second and third respectively, the office said.

In French-speaking Switzerland, Emma remained the top choice for girls for the 11th year in a row, ahead of Eva and Léa.

Gabriel was the name most picked for boys in Suisse Romande, followed by Liam and Lucas, the BFS said.

In Italian-speaking areas, Giulia was the most popular name for girls, while Sofia and Emma rounded out the top three.

Leonardo was the most widely selected name for boys, ahead of Gabriel and Liam.

Switzerland recorded 85,287 births in 2014, with boys (43,859) slightly outnumbering girls (41,437).
