The batteries involved are made by Japanese supplier Panasonic and used on e-bikes made by Austrian company KTM Bike Industries, which has voluntarily cooperated with the recall, Astra said on Monday.
Because of “production errors” the batteries can in very rare cases overheat and spark, which can generate smoke and flames, the federal office said.
The recall involves Panasonic NKY442B2 batteries with serial numbers beginning with RA16 and RA17, Astra said.
The serial number is visible at the bottom of the battery.
Owners of bikes with such batteries are advised to immediately remove them from the bike.
They should not be reused or recharged.
KTM says customers can exchange the defective batteries for new ones.
The bike manufacturer said 150,000 defective batteries were produced by Panasonic.
