Hot dogs lap up liver sausage sundaes

Hounds languishing in the July heat around Bremen have been treated to a very special snack to cool them down - but it's one that might put humans off their lunch.

Walk into any of Leonardo Capararese's ice-cream shops in and around Bremen and you'll find a standard offering – chocolate, vanilla, sorbet, cones, and tiny plastic spoons.

But if you happened to bring a four-legged furry friend, you might find him much more interested than usual in what's behind the counter.

Since 2009 Capararese has been offering special flavours of his dairy treats for dogs, including beef and turkey.

This year's canine confection brings the delicious, meaty taste of Leberwurst (liver sausage) to the world of ice cream.

Capararese says that he struck on the idea of special doggy delights when he noticed many pet owners ordering plain vanilla for their companions.

He wanted to create a healthy alternative for the animals that didn't include so much sugar, and combined meat, carrots, milk and water to bring his idea into reality.

“Most of them scarf it down in one gulp,” he said of his pooch patrons, “but there are some who lick the ice-cream up.”

Capararese isn't alone in the mutt munchies market, as his Lower Saxony-based chain faces competition from Marco Vazzola of Birkenfeld, Rhineland-Palatinate.
