Police in Darmstadt, southern Hesse, said that they received numerous phone calls from motorists on Autobahn 672 reporting a man driving the low-speed transport on the outside lane of the highway.
Rushing to the scene, police found the 87-year-old being safely escorted by two motorists who had stepped in to save his life.
They drove behind him slowly, using their tail lights to warn oncoming cars of the slow-moving convoy in the fast lane.
After the convey came to a halt one officer switched places with the old man and brought his transport back to the police station while he took a ride in the patrol car.
“He was perfectly healthy, he'd just taken a wrong turn” a police spokeswoman told Zeit Online.
Family members later came and picked up the pensioner from the police station.
