The bomb threat concerned an SAS plane travelling from Stockholm’s Arlanda airport to Helsinki.

The plane was set to leave the international airport at 10:30pm on Thursday night but police prevented it taking off, instead redirecting passengers to another plane.

The bomb alert was finally called off early on Thursday morning and the plane was examined by technicians.

“During the night we went on searching through the plane, and also examined the checked-in baggage. The luggage never got loaded on board, but stood on carts next to the plane,” police spokesman Kjell Lindgren told TT.

“They don’t seem to have found anything,” Darko Ali, an officer for the airport’s border police was quoted as saying.

SAS’s press officer Cathrine Sandgren told Swedish newspaper Expressen that 53 people were supposed to have boarded the plane.

The man has been arrested by police in Helsinki.

There have been several bomb scares at Arlanda in the past year. In December flights were delayed at the airport following reports of fears that luggage in a plane contained a bomb.

And last May police were forced to cordon off terminal two of the airport after a passenger claimed to be carrying a bomb in his bag.
