Swedish group to debate new stimulating word

A Swedish sex education group will this week meet to discuss the adoption of a new word for female masturbation after launching a competition to come up with a term last year.

The new word will be discussed during the Swedish Association for Sexuality Equality’s (RFSU) annual congress, which will take place between Friday and Sunday in the central Swedish city of Västerås.

Last November the organization launched a competition to come up with a new word for the taboo activity after noting the absence of such a term at a bi-annual meeting in 2013.

RFSU was immediately flooded with suggestions, which included words such as “klittra”, “pulla” and “selfa”.

Speaking to The Local when the competition was launched, spokeswoman Kristina Ljungros said: “Rather than sit around amongst ourselves talking about it, we thought we would launch a nationwide competition.

“We are trying to put sexuality on the agenda – the positive aspects, not just the negative ones like sexual abuse. We want to focus on the good parts, the lust.

“When it comes to masturbation, people mostly think about just men doing it and we don't think of it as common for women. If we don't have a word in the language, how can we even talk about it?” she argued.

She added that the absence of the word suggests that Sweden still did not have gender equality.

Also on the agenda for this week’s congress are the virginity concept, sexual crimes legislation, the need for a third legal gender and surrogacy.

“I look forward to meeting RFSU's members at the weekend and together decide on questions about the future of family policy, surrogate motherhood, parental insurance and decide if the new word for masturbation,” Ljungros said in a statement.
