Denmark’s trains get free and better internet

Commuters in Denmark will now have an easier time firing off that last-minute work assignment to the boss or merely spacing out on Facebook to pass the time.

Rail operator DSB announced on Tuesday that all of its long-distance trains will now offer free and improvement internet to passengers.

The free wifi will now be on all of DSB’s IC3, IC4 and IR4 trains throughout the country, whereas before there was only internet access between Copenhagen and Aalborg.

“We are happy to be able to offer our customers a better solution that covers significantly more of the country. We know from customer surveys that [better internet connectivity] is a big wish and now we can offer it to many more of our customers,” DSB spokeswoman Susanne Mørch Koch said in a statement.

In addition to now offering free wifi on all trains, the internet signals themselves have been upgraded from 3G to 4G. The company cautioned however that even with the upgrade there will be a limit to how much the network can bear so it advised travellers to “download that good movie at home”.

DSB also said that there will still likely be “annoying holes in internet coverage” on some rail stretches.

“We won't hit the goals of our internet ambitions with this upgrade; that would require larger capacities than providers can offer right now,” Koch said.
