Jesus makes way for Juve fans in Rimini

For the faithful flock of Rimini, Saturday was meant to be an evening of prayer in the town's main square, Piazza Cavour. But football had other plans.

Normally, Rimini's traditional Corpus Christi celebrations would attract a large crowd of the faithful to the square.

But this year, the feast has been pushed out of the piazza into the cathedral as it coincides with the Champions League Final, which kicks off just 15 minutes after the start of mass.

A statement on the website of the Diocese of Rimini justified the move: “ It is understood that the bars and pubs of the neighbouring Vecchia Pescheria will be full of big screens for the final, making concentrated prayer difficult.”

As a result, celebrations have been moved to the city's cathedral. However, football won't be the only thing on big screens around the city. The church will put up a screen of its own for believers to follow the service outside the cathedral.

A member of the diocese told The Local that they weren't worried about a low turn out this year: “Probably the people in the bars watching the game probably wouldn't have come anyway”, he said.

Is football the new religion then?

“No – it's certainly an interest but it just depends what value you give the word.”

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
