The incident occurred at around 3.10pm when a man driving a car from Saint Ursanne toward Courgenay veered into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a car travelling in the opposite direction, Jura cantonal police said.

The woman passenger in the rear of the car heading toward Courgenay died on the spot while the driver and another passenger in the front of the car were taken to hospital in Délémont after being removed from the vehicle by the Jaws of Life, police said.

The occupants of the other car also had to be removed through the use of metal cutting equipment before being transported to hospital by Rega emergency rescue officials.

The A-16 motorway between Courgenay and Saint Ursanne in the northwestern part of Switzerland was closed for three and a half hours while police and other officials cleaned up the crash site.

An investigation into the accident is continuing.
