Spaniards are slowly stubbing out the ciggies

The Eurobarometer report has been released to coincide with World No Tobacco Day on May 31st and reveals a mixed picture of Spaniards’ smoking habits.

The report, 'Attitudes of Europeans towards Tobacco and Electronic Cigarettes' reveals that the average number of smokers has decreased by 4 percent (from 33 percent in 2012 to 29 percent in 2014) but still a third of all Spaniards light up on a daily basis.

Younger Spaniards are the heaviest smokers, 40 percent of 25 – 39 year olds enjoy a regular fag. 

The report reveals that Europe’s heaviest smokers are to be found in southern Europe. Greece takes the smoking crown with 38 percent of people smoking, followed by 35 percent of Bulgarians and 33 percent of Hungarians.

Swedes are the least likely to partake in a recreational puff with only 11 percent of the Scandinavians admitting to being regular smokers. 

Around 93 percent of Spanish smokers light up every day, smoking an average of 17 cigarettes.

Spaniards also started smoking at a younger age than any other Europeans – at an average of 16.7 years old.

One little Spaniard was forced to start smoking a bit too early recently; a picture of a baby smoking a cigarette was uploaded to Instagram, causing outrage and calls that the mother be arrested for child abuse.
