The dance music superstar made the announcement in an interview with Swedish music station NRJ on Monday, three weeks after his mum told a tabloid she understood he'd been invited to the gig at Stockholm's Royal Palace.

“I met Carl Philip in Ibiza, where we got to hang out and talk for some time,” he told NRJ. He is so damn cool and a really good guy, actually. Humble,” he added as he spoke to the station from his home in Los Angeles.

The DJ said that the pair had chatted about the Prince's wish to have Avicii at his wedding, with the royal later dropping into his manager's office in the Swedish capital to discuss the details. “It will be really fun…it's an honour of course,” he added.

Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, lives in the US, but hails from Stockholm and is a regular visitor to his home country. He is set to perform at Sweden's Summer Burst Festival in Gothenburg and Stockholm later this month. With hits including 'Wake Me Up', 'Hey Brother' and 'The Nights' , he has a huge setlist to choose from for each of his upcoming events

Swedish electropop duo Icona Pop who rose to global fame with their track I Love It in 2012 have also been confirmed as performers at the royal wedding which will follow an evening banquet in Karl XI's Gallery in the Royal Palace on Saturday June 13th.

Prince Philip has dated Sofia Hellqvist since January 2013. She is a former fashion model who famously participated in the scandalous TV series Paradise Hotel. The couple met in 2009 at a club in Stockholm's posh Stureplan district. They have lived together on the island of Djurgården since 2011.

Speaking to The Local previously, Roger Lundgren, a royal expert and editor of Kungliga Magazine, described the couple’s relationship as “a Cinderella story”.

“This is a couple who had to fight for love and acceptance,” he told The Local.

“Some people have had their own negative ideas about Sofia because she was on Paradise Hotel hundreds of years ago, but I can tell you she is a wonderful, wonderful person.”
