The man, from the canton of Thurgau, was in the vicinity of a trail linking the Ebenalp and Schäfler Alpine meadows before the accident occurred around 2pm on Monday, cantonal police said.

Police were alerted by a man in a nearby meadow who heard the cry of the victim after he fell.

The hiker was dead by the time a Rega emergency rescue team arrived with a helicopter on the scene along with Alpine Rescue Switzerland.

Police were seeking information from anyone who may have seen the accident, which took place in a region in Eastern Switzerland that is popular with hikers and climbers.
