The amateur photographer was visiting the family of a fellow student with an apartment in the Upper Engadine region when he decided to set off early Sunday morning to take pictures, cantonal police said.
When he did not come back at noon and could not be reached by phone, the family and went to look for him.
They discovered his car in a parking area of the Juliersstrasse above Silvaplana, southwest of St. Moritz, and then alerted police.
Using a helicopter, the Rega emergency rescue service found the man in the streamed of a gorge but he was already dead.
Police believe he plunged 30 metres from a rock face while taking photographs.
The local prosecutor’s office is directing the investigation into the death with cantonal police.
