The rain in Spain falls mainly…everywhere

One man was swept away to his death in a flash flood while walking allowing the banks of the river Arkil in Navarra on Wednesday while authorities in five municaplities were preparing to take emergency action as rivers across the region burst their banks.

In the north coast in the Basque city of San Sebastian, residents were evacuated from their homes as the Urumea river overflowed while in neighbouring Aragon authorities initiated an emergency flood plan and have requested help from the military to assist in the deluge.

Areas around Burgos and Teruel had also flooded.

Coastal areas in the north of Spain have been battered by storms with waves of up to ten meters high reported and red alert warnings issued in Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria.

In San Sebastian, cameraman Mikel Gasca captured the moment spectators were caught unaware and drenched by a gigantic wave.

Winds of up to 100km/h were predicted across most of Spain bar Madrid and Extremadura.

Meanwhile in mountain areas with heavy snowfall and high winds predicted Spain’s meteorological agency (AEMET) imposed avalanche alert in 15 provinces.
