The 14-year-old was on a school trip in the resort of Mölltaler Gletscher in Carinthia when he tumbled from the 3123 metre peak, landing just a few feet away from dangerous rocks.
The boy had stepped backwards to take a photo of himself against the scenery with his mobile phone but slipped over the icy edge, and then slid down the slope. He only came to a stop after hitting a ledge below.
The teenager was with five friends and a ski instructor at the top of Mount Scharek when the incident took place.
Despite the dramatic fall, the schoolboy was lucky and escaped with just a shoulder injury and bumps and bruises. He was airlifted to hospital in Schwarzach and was said to be suffering from shock.
