Mobile phone offences zoom on Swiss roads

Of the total 77,759 people who lost their licence in Switzerland in 2014, 10,589 were penalized for using phones and gadgets while driving, 3.7 percent more than in the previous year.

The figure is one percent higher than the overall rise in confiscated licences for 2014, which was 2.7 percent.

Plus the number of official warnings dished out to drivers due to gadget-use rose by 6.8 percent.

Nevertheless, the two principal reasons for losing a licence remain drink-driving and speeding.

The number of licences lost for speeding offences went up slightly, by 0.9 percent, to 29,971 cases.

However, the amount of people losing their licence for being over the legal alcohol limit went down by 3.2 percent on the previous year, to 15,781 cases.
