In absolute terms the population grew by almost 72,000 last year, with growth significantly higher than in the previous year (2013: +56 000).
More than half of the population growth was concentrated in eastern Austria (55.9%), where Vienna accounted for a large share of the total increase (38.9%). For the past ten years the capital has seen the strongest growth of all of Austria’s states.
Within Vienna the fastest growing area was the Donaustadt district, with an increase of 4,400 new people. However, the cities of Innsbruck, Linz and Wiener Neustadt grew at an even faster than Vienna, at 1.8 percent.
Tyrol and Vorarlberg recorded growth of 0.9%, slightly above average for Austria. The smallest increases were in Burgenland and Carinthia (0.3%).
Population increases occurred mainly in urban areas and in the vicinity of major highways.
