The accident occurred on Monday evening in Rohrmoos in Styria's Liezen district, when the man and his female companion left the regular luge run for a nearby ski slope, and lost control of their toboggan. They crashed into a tree in a steep, forested area.
It was 8:35 pm, when according to police, the pair ventured onto the ski slope, which was illuminated for night skiing but was too steep and difficult for safe sledging.
The pair were descending from the summit of the Hochwurzen at enormous speed. Skiers who witnessed the accident administered immediate first aid, but help arrived too late for the 57-year-old man. His 52-year-old companion was airlifted to Schladming hospital with serious head injuries.
Police do not believe alcohol played a role in the tragedy.
A 75-year-old woman died on a toboggan run in Tyrol earlier in the month.
