PRISON

Prison missing supplies of loo paper and soap

Cleaning materials and supplies of everyday essentials such as toilet paper have allegedly gone missing from Austria’s third largest prison - to the tune of €12,000.

The director of Karlau prison in Graz is now investigating whether this is a possible case of embezzlement by corrupt prison guards or an act of revenge by dissatisfied inmates.

Karlau prison houses 500 prisoners. It appears that over the past couple of years monthly supplies of toilet paper, toothbrushes, soap, detergents, and razors, which are paid for by the state, have not been handed over to the inmates.

“We used to get these things once in a while, and then not at all. Over the years someone must have been making a fortune,” one prisoner told the Heute newspaper. It’s not clear what prisoners were using in the absence of toilet paper and soap.

Prison director Josef Mock told Heute that he knew nothing of the alleged embezzlement but hoped to shed light on what had happened after an investigation. He has referred the case to the Federal Office for Anti-Corruption (BAK).
