The military jets are among four deployed at the base as part of a rotating Nato mission to boost defence of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia as a result of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Ansa cited military sources although no further details were provided.

Tuesday’s interception comes five days after two Italian jets stopped another Russian warplane that threatened to violate Nato airspace.

The Italian Air Force took over the four-month mission on January 1st.
