Power outage leaves TV programme in the dark

A power outage in south-central Berlin left more than a 1,000 Berlin households in the dark and was also responsible for the delay of television programming.

News talk show Günther Jauch usually goes live to the air after the Sunday night crime drama, Tatort, but last night, viewers were forced to watch a repeat for 20 minutes while crews worked to fix the problem.

"Due to a power outage in Berlin right now, Günther Jauch cannot be broadcast live," read a banner across the screen for the first 20 minutes of the programme.

Even host Jauch and his guests for the evening had to spend some time sitting in the dark as the emergency generator only provided enough assistance for emergency lighting.

According to a spokesperson from a Vattenfall subsidiary, the company was aware that Günther Jauch was being affected by the outage and their teams worked as quickly as possible to resolve the problem.

The live broadcast picked up shortly after 10pm, where Jauch and his guests discussed all things Greece in the wake of the left-wing Syrzia's electoral victory.

Even the subsequent programme, the Tagesthemen news hour, was delayed by 15 minutes due to the technical fault.

According to police, a total of 1,280 Berlin households and 145 businesses were affected by the power outage in the Schöneberg district caused by a faulty substation.

The Berlin electrical authorities are now looking into the exact cause of the 9:18 to 9:55 pm interruption.
