A police spokesperson told The Local that officers had been called to the apartment building in Bad Zwischenahn, near Oldenburg, when a neighbour reported there was furniture being thrown out of an apartment window.
"The initial call was about a man on a rampage," the spokesperson said.
Upon arrival, the man opened his door with a knife behind his back. According to the press release, one officer tripped, giving the man an opportunity to attack.
The officer suffered stab wounds to the arm and hand, but still managed to spray the attacker with pepper spray, to no avail.
One officer fired their weapon several times. The attacker died at the scene, despite efforts to save his life.
Authorities are now investigating the shooting and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
"Until then, we cannot say whether the man was under the influence of any substances," the spokesperson said.
