More severe weather set for south-west France

UPDATED: France has issued a severe weather warning for motorists in southwestern France with more heavy snow forecast. Check out some of the best pictures of the "snowpocalypse".

Weather agency Météo France said late on Monday afternoon that 15 départements in south and south western France would have severe weather from 4am on Tuesday morning and for the following 24 hours.

It warned that the weather would cause considerable danger for motorists due to snow and black ice.

The blizzards follow around one and a half metres of snowfall that hit the peaks of the Pyrénées over the weekend – which ironically proved to be too much of the white stuff for many skiers.

Slopes at a number of ski resorts – including Artouste, La Pierre Saint Martin and Gourette – were closed until Monday morning with access to the areas also shut off.
Gourette saw an avalanche of "exceptional" size on Sunday afternoon, with the agency issuing a "maximum" avalanche warning for the area – which was lifted on Monday morning.

France's social media users were a-Twitter as the snow continued to fall – and here are some of the best snaps from the weekend's cold snap.
