Icy Stockholm sees 43 accidents in six hours

Police in Stockholm said they had recorded 43 accidents in the space of just six hours.

“When it’s wet in the evening and then the weather changes and it gets colder, that’s when the problems come,” Ludwig Freund from the Stockholm Police told newspaper Aftonbladet.

Icy patches on roads in Gothenburg also caused a number of accidents in Monday morning traffic.

A live map of weather conditions run by the Swedish Transportation Administration (Trafikverket) showed vast belts of ice and snow on Monday morning and continuing throughout the week.

The agency warned of icy roads in Skåne, Blekinge, Halland and southern Småland in the south of the country, while snowy conditions are making driving treacherous for the northern two-thirds of the country.

Northern Uppland and Lappland can expect around ten centimetres of snow on Monday, forecasters said.

“It looks like we’re going to keep seeing cold air over the whole country, at least until Thursday when it becomes more uncertain,” said Emil Björck from the SMHI meteorological agency.

Temperatures are forecast to range from -5C in the south to -20C in the north.
