Horseplay triggers A1 motorway vehicle crash

Too much horsepower — literally — was blamed for causing a costly motor vehicle accident on the A1 motorway in the canton of Saint Gallen.

Two horses in a trailer were being pulled behind an SUV driven by a 39-year-old man in Oberbüren when the accident occurred on Sunday, cantonal police said.

The motorist, who was driving toward Zurich, lost control of his vehicle and slammed through a median after one of the two horses started jumping around in the trailer, unbalancing the load.

From a photo issued by police, it appeared that the SUV jackknifed after lifting over the guard rail.

Police said damage to the median totaled 50,000 francs ($55,500), while the vehicle sustained 13,000 francs’ worth of damage.

The driver escaped harm but a vet had to be summoned to calm the agitated horse.

And the local fire department was called to deal with an oil leak.

The passing lanes on both sides of the motorway were closed for two hours, police said.
