Emergency teams in Haute-Savoie, an area in south east France bordering Italy and Switzerland, recovered the woman's body just after midnight in the early hours of Sunday.

The 55-year-old is believed to have slipped and fallen to her death while out for a trek in snow shoes in the commune of Montriond, which is just north of ski resorts Avoriaz and Morzine.

Medical teams reported that she likely died instantly.

According to FranceTV, the woman, who has not been named, left alone early on Saturday morning to go for hike. She took the cable car at Ardent but after failing to return, her husband reported that she was missing at lunch time on Saturday.

The specialist police mountain rescue team from Chamonix launched a search with the help of a helicopter, and found her body underneath a rocky ridge at Ardent.

The death marked the seventh in the Alps during the weekend, after six skiers were swept away and killed by an avalanche in the Queyras mountain range on Saturday.

The party of six, experienced skiers aged between 50 and 70, left on Saturday for a hike, known as ski touring, in the range straddling France and Italy but triggered an avalanche, the office of the Hautes-Alpes region said.
