The average power of new cars purchased in the country last year reached a record 158 horsepower in 2014, five percent higher than the previous year, according to figures released by Auto Schweiz, the Swiss association of automobile importers.
The growing popularity of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) accounts for the increase in motor size, the association says.
Four-wheel-drive vehicles last year made up 38.5 percent of new cars sales, Auto Schweiz said.
SUVs, which in 2006 accounted for only 6.5 percent of the Swiss car market, have since then tripled their share.
Although average cars in Switzerland are bigger, on paper they produced fewer carbon dioxide emissions on average last year (133 grams) compared with 176 grams in 2003.
However, SUVS remained well above the average at 151 grams.
