The hospital’s average yearly rate for twin births is 17. Doctors believe that the higher rate is due to an increase in the number of women becoming pregnant through artificial insemination.
Because the cost of fertility treatment is high, fertility centres often advise women to opt for transferring multiple embryos to increase the chances of getting pregnant – which also increases the likelihood of twins.
The hospital is based in the small market town of Schwarzach im Pongau. The first babies born there in 2015 were also twins, two boys born on January 9th.
Wieland Zeilmann, head of gynaecology at Schwarzach, said that twins are often considered a high-risk pregnancy as they tend to be born preterm, and thus women who are expecting twins are often sent to Schwarzach for specialist care.
