Janosch Städtler, just like millions of Germans across the country, received a bill for his TV license fee at the beginning of the year. Unlike millions of Germans, however, he is a Hungarian Vizsla hunting dog.

According to his owner Christian Städtler in Koblenz, six-year-old Janosch doesn't even like TV.

“Janosch likes having his peace and quiet in the evenings”, Christian told the Rhein-Zeitung on Wednesday.

“Our first dog watched animal films at least, but Janosch prefers running and goes straight to bed after dinner.”

Although he and his wife Inge returned the letter notifying Janosch that he would need to start paying in January – including a vet's bill as evidence of his canine persuasion – the first bill for €53.94 arrived on January 2nd.

“I really thought that would get us out of it”, Inge said, adding to Janosch, “You don't get that much pocket money”.

Contacted by the newspaper, a spokesman for the licensing authority said that it “sounded very much like a joke”.

He suggested that a cheeky friend of Christian's might have signed Janosch up to pay the TV licence fee online.
